Five Things That Made Me Happy This Week #26

Honestly, I’ve had more ups and downs than a dodgy lift recently. I forgot just how turbulent change can often be and just how tiring! Staying awake beyond 9pm is an absolute mission for me at the moment. Anyway, I’m attempting to just take it all in my stride, knowing that everything will even out in the end. I hope you’ve all had a wonderful week and had plenty of things to make you smile (don’t forget to share your stories with me!). Here’s what made me happy over the past seven days.

1. A gigantic afternoon tea:

There are few pleasures greater than the simple beauty of a hearty cup of tea and a huge slice of cake. It’s certainly one of my Mum’s favourite things so, for Mother’s Day, my brother and I organised a homemade afternoon tea for her. Which the two of us, as well as Dad, also benefited from (huzzah!) When I arrived back at home Mum, clearly excited about the afternoon ahead, had laid the table with a white tablecloth, some teacups and saucers, and some little flowery trays she’d bought. We ate far too much and laughed plenty; it was such a fun afternoon and so nice that we didn’t have to fight the crowds anywhere.

2. Gardening:

I had the day off work on Monday which just so happened to coincide with a beautifully sunny day. Greg and I had already planned to do some gardening so it worked out an absolute treat. I spent my day painting the garden walls a lovely shade of green, and planting flowers and bulbs. It was all very therapeutic and I felt like it made my soul happy. The garden finally seems to be coming together and I can’t wait to relax out there when it gets a bit warmer. Naturally, we rewarded all of our hard work with a scrumptious pub tea.

3. A stubborn to-do list item:

You know those items that just languish on your to-do list for ages and hang over you like a little black cloud? Well, I’ve had one of those that has been on my list for well over six months. Yes, SIX MONTHS. I’ve diligently written it down in my journal every single week and just never done it, partly because it was a big job, and partly because I was just struggling to fit it in. Anyway, I finally checked it off this week and I feel like a weight has been lifted. I’m so excited not to have to write it in my journal for the coming week! A small, but very real, victory.

4. A kind gesture:

Some personal circumstances made it really difficult to stick to my mantra of being brave and involved at work this week. All I wanted to do was be quiet and not be new. Thankfully, the colleagues who knew what was going on were really supportive and one of them even bought me a hot chocolate to cheer me up. It was nice to feel that, even though I’m sort of still a stranger, they felt comfortable with looking after me a bit. Happily, everything is all sorted now too so that’s doubly good news!

5. Glastonbury excitement:

Eeeeeeeek! The Glastonbury line up was revealed yesterday and I am SO excited! I mean, honestly, I’d probably say that even if I thought the line up was crap because I just love the festival, but still. It looks as though it’s going to be a complete disco fest with Barry Gibb taking the legend slot and the Jacksons also making an appearance, but I’m really looking forward to seeing the National and Songhoy Blues too! It all starts to feel real at this time of year and the horrors of sleeping in a tent for five days come flooding back. I’m just hoping that we get some good weather this year because I don’t know if I can bear to deal with that mud again.
