Five Things That Made Me Happy This Week #22

Ha. I actually wrote ‘thongs’ instead of ‘things’ when I wrote out the title for this post and had a little giggle to myself. Who cares, I’ve got plenty of time to learn to be an adult yet. Anyway, it feels like February just popped its head round the door to say hello and then sped off into the night. Where the hell has it gone?! It has been the busiest month ever and everything is just flying past me like I’m a lamppost in a hurricane. However, another busy week this week led to more happy moments so of course I’m here to share them with you!

1. An evening with friends:

I’ll admit it. On Monday when I woke up, the last thing I wanted to do was go to work and then get home late because I had plans. Do you ever get that? Where you just want to be a hermit for your whole life? Anyway, I did indeed go for a meal with my two lovely friends and acutally had a great time. As I always do with them. Serves me right for being so moany and ungrateful! Despite me trying to lose weight, I threw this week out of the window and ended up eating three delicious courses involving cannelloni and crème brûlée. Be still my beating heart! We exchanged gifts for birthdays and new houses and reflected on how far we’ve all come in the three years that we’ve been meeting up regularly. It was joyous.

2. London, baby!

Pahaha, I hate when people say, “London, baby!” but I’ve seen that episode of Friends so many times that those words are forever connected in my mind. Anyway, on Tuesday afternoon I finished work and hurtled down south to see my best buddy, Beth. I was exhausted, snotty, and a little bit anxious so I was relieved to be turning up at hers knowing she’d still love me anyway. I got to see her beautiful new house, we did Christmas presents (yes CHRISTMAS, we haven’t seen each other in so long), and we had all the snugs and yays. Then, we bedded down to prepare for our guest lecture at the University of West London the following day. Eeeek! Funnily enough, neither of us felt scared because we’re both secret show offs so we just had a quick run through and then went right ahead and did it. The students were wonderful and bright with plenty of questions and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. One of the highlights of my year so far probably, let alone week!

3. La Cage Aux Folles:

On Thursday evening, I had a girls night to the theatre to see La Cage Aux Folles. When I say girls, I mean my Mum, my Nan, my mother-in-law, and my sister-in-law and we had a great night! We went for a bite to eat first of all (because everything I have done this week seemed to involve eating something terribly unhealthy) and then settled in for the most joyous explosion of gender fluidity I’ve ever witnessed. Sometimes, when you see a show in a location that isn’t the West End, the quality isn’t as good and you end up feeling a little disappointed. That absolutely wasn’t the case with La Cage. The singing was magnificent, to the point where I was actually a bit shocked and amazed, the costumes were detailed and flamboyant, and the sets were colourful and vibrant. It was a lot of fun and I’d definitely recommend it!

4. Fun at work:

As I’ve mentioned before, I’ve been pretty stressed recently due to trying to get everything tied up at work so that I can hand it over in a neat little bundle. However, I’ve gradually come to the realisation that this probably isn’t possible, so I’ve managed to let go of some of that anguish and just try to relax a bit. Consequently, we’ve had a really fun few days at work in the knowledge that I’ll soon be off. So we’ve had those extra conversations and been a tiny bit less productive, all in honour of squeezing in as much time together as we can before I finish on Tuesday. We’ve laughed a lot and it has made me feel a lot less anxious about everything.

5. Bitten by the writing bug:

Because I had two hours to kill on my journeys to and from London this week, I decided to just free-write and it was glorious. I’m generally struggling to fit blogging into my life at the moment so to have that unadulterated, undisturbed time to just sit and write was beautiful. It has really got my creative juices flowing again so I’m looking forward to getting some more words on paper in the next few weeks (time permitting!) I know when I start to view the world as though it’s a story that my writing powers have returned so I’m hoping you’ll see some of it on the blog soon!
